Male Pattern Hair Loss
The cause in over 90% of hair loss cases in men and is defined as hair loss at the front, top and/or the crown/vertex of the scalp.
Male pattern hair loss is caused on by the presence of an enzyme (5-a-Reductase) in the hair roots in these areas – no such receptors exist in the back and sides of the scalp.
This enzyme stimulates the male hormone testosterone in to the more potent dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which causes the hair to thin (or retard). Over a period of time the hair becomes noticeably thinner and finer.
How susceptible the individual is to this process is determined by inherited genetics from one or both parents.
Although the most common form of hair loss in men, the treatments available depend on individual and environmental circumstances.
