It is a myth that only men suffer from genetic thinning, most women with androgenic Alopecia have diffuse thinning on all areas of the scalp (mainly concentrated on the vertex or top of the head). Androgenic Alopecia in women is due to the action of androgens, male hormones that are typically present in only small amounts. Androgenic Alopecia can be caused by a variety of factors tied to the actions of hormones, including, ovarian cysts, some contraceptive pills, pregnancy, and menopause. Just like in men, the hormone Di-hydro-testosterone (DHT) appears to be at least partially to blame for the miniaturisation of hair follicles in women suffering with female pattern baldness. Heredity plays a major factor in the disorder.

Women suffer from Androgenetic Alopecia as much as men, it just affects the hair in a different pattern, where as the male pattern is the classic 'monks patch' and the eventual 'horseshoe' shape. Female pattern hair loss is more of a diffuse (all over thinning and usually happens after the menopause. Though medical disorders which affect hormones may exacerbate this condition and speed up the hair shedding.

Androgens (male hormones) do not need to be raised to trigger a problem. Oestrogen (amongst other female hormones), when lowered, increase the effect of male hormones (inc, DHT). Such an imbalance causes many problems, including hair loss.

Women's hormone levels decline as menopause approaches and drop sharply during menopause and beyond. The cyclic nature of both our hair and hormones is one reason hair loss can increase at different stages of our lives.
